The debate on "Organics" and "Hydroponics"

There is a huge popular debate about the value of "organic"
fertilizers and methods, many people would like to apply
"organics" to hydroponics. Currently accepted organic fertilizer
components are dependent upon organisms in the soil to convert
the "organic" materials into a useable form for plants.
In hydroponics we provide the minerals required for plant growth
directly, completely eliminating the need for soil and soil organisms.
The result is much higher growth rates, yields and even
crop quality than organic methods can achieve. This is not what
some people want to hear, but it is the simple scientific truth - and
practically all scientists and educators in the fields of agriculture
and chemistry know it and will be the first to agree.
In fact, the kinds of materials which are permitted for use under "organic" regulations are not of sufficient purity to be used for hydroponic culture.
With this in mind it's important to recognize the reasons that
"organically" grown produce is gaining such popularity.
Consumers want to buy produce which is not tainted with
hazardous chemicals or poisons. There is an increasing public
demand for methods which are gentle on our delicate planet and
which don't harm the soil, water or ecosystems. Hydroponic
farming methods fit properly into this system of values if used
appropriately.
Hydroponics protects us from tainted soil because it doesn't use soil.
Less water is required for hydroponic culture and consequently
more food can be cultivated with less water.
The fertilizers we use for hydroponics are ultra-pure and leave no residue in the cultivated fruits and vegetables.
Since hydroponic technologies are more efficient than soil methods, more people can be fed with less area and ecological impact.

Hi! I love your wall.... I live in San Francisco and was starting a project like this on my back patio and came across your blog. I see you are used a "mat". What kind of mat did you use? Is this your growing medium? Do you have a link to where you got it? Also, what kind of PVC sheets? Thank you so much. Any help you can provide me would be appreciated. I have an outdoor patio wall with a water spigot. I would like to connect directly to the water spigot for irrigation since I don't have room for a tank (and to save money). How often do you water and do I need to add nutrients every time or can I simply feed occasionally?

Growing From Seed in a Hydroponic Wall ~ a dicey Proposition

I worked hard looking for a mat supplier here in México and finally I found it very near from home, lucky me.

It is not my intention to cause you so much troubles but I know you'II give me the best advice for my vertical garden.

Could you please tell me, whether to use a coconut growing medium or is ok just with the mat sandwich.

One more question, can I make a vertical garden from seeds or does it have to be plants with roots?

With the mat you are half way there !

How big is your plant wall going to be?

Inside or Outside?

Which types of Plants?

It is possible to grow from seeds but there are many reasons not to do it.

One is the wash down effect from the water going down.

perhaps if you seed and grow with the wall lying on the ground and after the plants are growing

then put the wall up vertically.

I have been using just the mat sandwich .. putting organic or rockwood just gets in the way of water flow to all the roots,which

can become an issue when there are patches of dried plants and you need to figure out how to help them. Also the plants do not need

any thing (coconut, rock wool ,sphagnum moss) other than mat to root.

If you put in plants that are strong, with some root growth (3-9 inches) they have a good chance to adjust

to their new life. You need to keep an eye on everything at the beginning. Make sure the timer is dependable.

a day without water puts great stress on young plants.

Will you attach the mat to pvc sheets with staples ?

If so make sure you place the staples vertically , not horizontal.

And try to use as few as possible as they effect water flow. ..

I'm from México City and have watched your video on vertical gardens at your blog.

I´m interested in building a vertical garden but being it my first project, I have doubts about the materials to use, especially the mat: you said you imported it from Canada. In case I can not import it, what substitute material could you recommend me?

The mat you used: What is it made of exactly??? Does the felt work???

On the other hand, I would appreciate if you could tell me if you put any kind of soil between the mat sandwich or do the plants grow roots into the mat by themselves.

Another question is: do I really need a filter for the irrigate system???

One last question:

Can I make a vertical garden from seeds (or does it have to be plants with roots)?

Hola Angie,

The mat is key to having a plant wall without soil..

It has to allow the right air flow to the roots

not decompose over time

Not hold water so the roots can dry after watering

be strong enough to hold the stems of the plants with the aid of a few staples

roots have to like growing in it and be able to grab into but not penetrate through

also has to be non toxic inert inorganic material.....

So the mat is called " water retentive mat"

It is used in roof gardens or a barrier layer.

I do not use any soil or any other filler on the walls.

Just two layers of mat..

there may be many companies that make it..

maybe one in mexico?

There may be calcium build up in our hydroponic water system..
one way to increase mineral flow without buildup is placing magnets around the
flow pipe.. Some people say bunk..others say works great.

"Physics shows that chemicals change weight under the influence of magnetic fields. So does water. More hydroxyl (OH-) ions are created to form calcium bicarbonate and other alkaline molecules. It is these molecules that help to reduce acidity"
